Responsible Artificial Intelligence:
An interdisciplinary approach for a better future
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing our world and offers enormous opportunities in almost all areas of life. But with great power comes great responsibility. To ensure that AI is used for the benefit of humanity – fairly, safely, transparently and ethically – we as a society need an approach known as “Responsible AI”.
In our view, this is not a purely technical challenge, but requires close cooperation and expertise from various disciplines: technology, law, business and society. We bring these stakeholders together in the ARIC to pursue this approach together.
Technology:
Laying the foundation
The technological basis is crucial. Expertise is required on both the software and hardware side. The focus here is on the development of robust and reliable AI systems whose decisions are comprehensible and explainable ("explainability"). Another important aspect is the design of human-centered AI that is based on appropriate and fair data governance. This is the only way to ensure that the technology itself is trustworthy and functions as intended.
Legal, regulation & compliance:
Setting the framework
AI systems do not operate in a vacuum. They must fit into existing and future legal frameworks. Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and standards is therefore essential. Legal and auditing skills ("assurance") are necessary to ensure compliance with these rules, especially when using AI in critical infrastructures or for algorithms with far-reaching effects. This legal framework protects individuals and society and creates trust in the technology.
Economy:
Generating added value
The use of AI must also make economic sense. Companies and organizations need business insights, in-depth domain knowledge of their specific areas of application as well as knowledge of processes and relevant key performance indicators (KPIs). This is the only way to ensure that AI solutions create real added value, increase efficiency or enable new business models. In the long term, the responsible use of AI should contribute to the prosperity of our economies by promoting innovation and supporting sustainable growth.
Society and ethics: anchoring
values
Ultimately, the use of AI must be based on the values and ethical ideas of our society. This requires an examination of ethical principles, the development of clear rules and guidelines for the use of AI and the consideration of social impacts. Technology development should be in line with our value system and implemented sustainably. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide an important global orientation framework for this to ensure that AI contributes to solving social challenges and does not create new ones.
Interdisciplinarity as the key
Responsible AI is therefore a holistic concept. It is clear that no single discipline can master the complex challenges alone.
Only through the interplay of technological excellence, legal compliance, economic rationality and ethical and social responsibility can we develop the full potential of artificial intelligence safely and for the benefit of all.
Interdisciplinary expertise and continuous dialog are the key to shaping a future in which AI serves people - which is why we at ARIC always work on an interdisciplinary basis.

The five dimensions
The introduction of Responsible AI is based on five key dimensions. In our view, these five dimensions are important to ensure a responsible approach to AI.
