ARIC Movie Night | The Imitation Game

The next ARIC Movie Night will take place on April 9, 2026. We will watch The Imitation Game and then discuss questions such as: What does the Turing Test mean in times of modern LLMs? How inclusive is the development of AI models today? As well as the many other points of reference that the film offers.
Movie description
The Imitation Game (2014) is based on the story of Alan Turing, co-founder of computer science and a pioneer in the field of AI with the Turing Test. The drama won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Turing was a logician, mathematician, computer scientist and cryptanalyst and conducted research during the Second World War at Bletchley Park, the British military facility that was responsible for deciphering German communications during the Second World War. He succeeded in deciphering German radio messages using his Turing Machine. Today, the Turing Machine is considered groundbreaking for the development of AI. It is a mental model that describes what an algorithm is and shows the limits of what can and cannot be calculated.
The film shows Turing’s eventful life, in which he had to struggle with a number of challenges. He was convicted for his homosexuality and eventually committed suicide in the post-war period.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley play the leading roles in The Imitation Game.
Content notes: The film deals with suicide, queer hostility and conversion therapy.
