ARIC-Tipp | The Digital Omnibus: What will happen to our digital rights?

On Tuesday March 31st, join us to learn more about the Digital Omnibus!

You wouldn’t be blamed to have missed it: massive legislative changes are underway without much buzz. The EU is “simplifying” and “integrating” digital regulation, but critics say hard fought-for and critical digital rights are being watered down. Last November, the European Commission published the Digital Omnibus, which includes legislation on AI, data, privacy, and cyber laws. Before it will be turned into force, it still needs to be approved by the European Parliament and the Council of Europe — and there is thus still the chance for change.

While parts of the plans have been generally positively received, others have raised eyebrows. For example, key proposals include a change in the definition of personal data as well as what is considered „for scientific purposes“. Are these changes necessary to unlock European competitiveness or is our personal data at risk of being fiddled with by Big Tech (even more)? What is happening exactly and should we be concerned?

We invited Ralf Bendrath to explain what is going on. He will give talk titled „Throwing your rights under the Omnibus – how the EU’s reform agenda threatens to erase a decade of digital rights“. Ralf is adviser for civil liberties, justice and home affairs for the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament, where he mainly works on data protection and other digital rights. In his spare time, he is active in the Digitale Gesellschaft e.V. He hacked the Commodore C-64 in the 1980s, studied political science in the 1990s, conducted academic research on cyberwar and data protection in the 2000s, and since 2009 works in the European Parliament for the Greens.

After this talk, there is the opportunity for discussion as well as a common write-to-your-representatives session for anyone interested.
